A placement and Training section functions in the college to help students to come into contact with prospective employers. Campus interviews are arranged periodically where the recruiting departments of the industries interview final year students. Industrial training for the pre-final year students during summer vacation is also arranged. The placement bureau is headed by a professor who acts as the liaison officer between the institution and the industries and engineering establishments.

A consumer co-operative stores is run for the benefit of the students and staff of the college. It functions in the main building of the college. It caters to the general requirements of students and staff such as record note books, drawing instruments,stationery and toilet articles.


A part-time medical officer is available between 5.00 p.m and 6.30p.m for the benefit of students and staff. The dispensary is housed near the hostel office.


The college bus is available for use by students and staff at prescribed rates. It makes regular trips between the college and Santhinagar via Palayamkottai bus stand, Market and High ground for the benefit of day scholars and members of staff. The bus is also used by students for their visits to industries in and around Tirunelveli.


The State Bank of India, Palayamkottai, has its extension counter at the college main building. It functions between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Besides State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Tirunelveli Junction, has its extension counter near the hostel office. It functions between 10.30 am and 2-30 pm from monday to Saturday.


A canteen is run for the convenience of the students and staff of the college.


For the benefit of the inmates of hostels and others, the college has provided STD facility in two places in the campus – one at the ladies hostel – Amaravathi illam and the other is in the dispensary building which is near hostel office. PCO facility is available in all hostels.


Facilities are available for playing games such as Cricket, Hockey,Foot Ball, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Ball Badminton, Tennis, Shuttle, Kabaddi, Table Tennis, Chess, and Weight lifting. Students have practice in sports and games between 4.30pm and 6.30pm daily.

Students are advised to come to the play fields in the proper play outfit. This will be canvas shoes, shorts and T-shirts for men students and canvas shoes, skirts and shirts for women students.


The college has 5 hostels-Kaveri, Porunai and Vaigai for Men and Amaravathi and Bhavani for Women. The Principal/Dean is the Ex-officio warden of the hostel. He is assisted by the Associate Warden, Hostel Superintendents, Deputy Wardens and Resident Tutor.

The men’s hostel can accomodate about 407 students and the hostel for women has a capacity of 263. The rooms are furnished with steel cots, tables and chairs. Cupboards are also provided in every hostel room. All the rooms are provided with ceiling fans.


Government College of Engineering,Tirunelveli was started in october 1981 to cater the needs of the people of this region. Till then the youth of the southern district had to go to Madurai and places farther away to pursue their engineering studies. Thus, with the starting of this college, one of the long felt expectations of the people of this area came to be fulfilled.

This institution is ideally located in an extent of about 23 hectares. It is about 2 km from New Tirunelveli Bus Stand and 8 km from Tirunelveli Junction Bus Stand. The college campus lies on the Tirunelveli – Tiruvandrum national highway.(RouteMap)

At its inception, the college admitted students for 3 undergraduate branches, namely Civil,Mechanical and Electronics and communication Engineering. Electrical and Electronics Engineering branch was introduced during the academic year 1986-1987. Further, Computer Science and Engineering branch has been offered since the academic year 1989-90. A Post-graduate course (M.E Degree) in Computer Science and Engineering was started during 1994-’95. Part-time B.E. Degree courses are offered in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering.

The College has a sound infrastructure with well equipped Laboratories, Workshops, Computer centre,Library and Staff.

This institution is affiliated to the Anna University with effect from 31-12-2001. The following self-supporting courses are offered in this college: M.E Computer Science and Engineering, M.E Engineering Design, M.E. Power Electronics and Drives, M.E. Structural Engineering and M.E. Applied Electronics. The college has been recognized as Zonal office for the conduct of Anna university examinations/Central Valuation for 24 colleges in the southern region. The college has been chosen as one of the four centers to issue eligiblity certificates on behalf of the Registrar, Anna University. And to cap it all the college has been granted recognition by the Anna university as a Regional Centre for Ph.D. and M.S. Programmes.

All the departments of this college function in separate buildings. There are 5 student hostels, 3 for men and 2 for women. Residential Quarters for the staff are available within the college premises. Thus the college has made fast progress in many respects. one looks forward to seeing this college grow into an institution of eminence.
